THE MAKING OF SHORT "PRAZINBURK RIDGE" INSIDE UNREAL ENGINE - MARTIN BELL

WE SAT DOWN WITH MARTIN TO DISCUSS HIS NEW SHORT FILM

Martin Bell is a Previs Supervisor, Independent Filmmaker and Screenwriter who has made his own short film inside Unreal Engine, under his company Yes, Commissioner?. Martin has worked on films such as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Little Mermaid, No Time to Die and 1917, to name a few. Jamie sat down to talk to him about a personal project, his short film Prazinburk Ridge.

As Martin makes his second appearance on The Process podcast, we get an in-depth insight into the development of his short film. When we previously spoke, the film existed as a trailer and a 6 minute previz edit. In this episode we get to hear how he took the film past the finish line and even showcased it as an Official Selection in the Wigan & Leigh Film Festival 2022 and so festival. Check out the final trailer here:

The steps to develop from a previs edit to the final with no funding or budget required a lot of problem solving. Martin decided the solution would be to utilise cel shading, as it can be done in Unreal Engine. Some of the 3D assets used in the previs edit were a combination of photorealistic models, alongside models of subpar quality. Cel shading offered a way of adding a consistent artistic style while being able to keep those assets in the final film.

Here is Martin's Previs edit, before the addition of cel shading:

The mocap suit Martin used for the characters was the original Perception Neuron, which although an old piece of kit, allowed him to make the movements of the characters in the end product look brilliant. In addition to body movements Martin used Mocap X, a facial motion capture app for iPhone, for all the facial animation. Although these rigs are limited, they are very easy to animate.
