WE TALK TO CONNOR ABOUT HOW HE WENT FROM ZERO VFX EXPERIENCE TO AN INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL.
Starting from scratch in any artistic medium is always daunting, but for Connor this seems to be where he thrives. His work speaks for itself, and they certainly don't look like the projects of someone who only opened Unreal Engine a year ago, let alone their first experience with anything 3D. Connor blames his hyperfixation as the reason for his quick progression through such a steep learning curve. Although he tries to avoid focusing on the short duration of his time in animation, we feel that the ground he has covered in this brief period is highly impressive and inspirational to other aspiring artists and people wanting to learn new skills across the board.
We took a look at some of Connor's personal projects, which acted as practical ways to learn the skills to break into the VFX industry. We mainly focused on his 2022 short 'The Mage', an action short made in Unreal Engine 5. In just 5 days Connor made this short as an experiment in In-Camera Visual Effects. We also looked at a few other pieces, one being a work-in-progress clip of a fan music video for the song 'The Summoning' by Sleep Token.

Connor began learning Unreal Engine during his time as a stay at home dad, by utilising any available time in his day. As well as discussing Connor's entry and development in the 3D world, we also spoke about how he uses premade assets and motion capture data, as well as many other technical aspects of his approach to creating his work.
