WE CHAT WITH ANIMATION EXTRAORDINAIRE KRIS THEORIN ABOUT THE MAKING OF HIS BRAND NEW SHORT.
Something's Awry Productions are a Philadelphia based, family run studio, who in the past few years have been making a name for themselves in the world of 3D animation, both commercially and with the popularity of their independent projects. Recently, their new horror short 'Unlucky Charms' (released in October) has became a viral sensation. The Cinema 4D short was shared on the CGMeetup YouTube channel and racked up over a million views. It reached even bigger audiences, when YouTuber CoryxKenshin included his reaction to the breakfast cereal themed horror in a recent video, reaching over 5 million views. This appearance boosted Kris' YouTube subscribers from 15k to 100k in just 5 days!
Stills from UNLUCKY CHARMS by Something's Awry
Kris started his animation journey 13 years ago, with LEGO stop motion, which can still be seen over on his YouTube channel. Over time he began adding visual effects to the stop motion (such as explosions and lightsabres), eventually evolving into short animated videos. In this time Kris has developed his own workflow using programs such as Cinema 4D, Substance Painter, Redshift, ZBrush & After Effects, while performing all the character mocap himself using his Perception Neuron 3. Through his progression into the world of 3D animation Kris has developed a strong visual style which he describes as "Stylized Photorealism". When we sat down with Kris for an episode of The Process, he talked us through his workflow and allowed us to get a feel of how much work goes into one of his shorts. With the creative direction, writing and development of ideas form his brothers Kurtis & Nik, and all animation, editing, VFX and sound design done by Kris, a project of this scale takes around 5 months to complete.
